Regional Attractions Surrounding Mountain View, Arkansas

Mountain View is ideally located in the North Central Ozarks to enable an explorer to use this area as a base from which to visit many other unique attractions. There are numerous other historic communities nearby including Leslie, home of the Ozark Heritage Arts Center & Museum and Serenity Farms Bread (www.serenityfarmbread.com). Calico Rock's entire downtown (www.calicorock.com) is on the National Historic Register and is on the way to world class trout fishing at Norfork. Back to the East, Batesville (www.batesville.dina.org) is the second oldest town in Arkansas and home to Lyon's College, a top rated liberal arts college.

Just North of Mountain View and surrounding Blanchard Springs Caverns, is the Sylamore District of the Ozark National Forest. In addition to finding camping, swimming, and fishing in this natural wilderness area; horseback trails and the 14 mile Sylamore Creek Hiking Trail follow scenic routes to the White River.

The Buffalo River (www.nps.gov/buff) became this country's first National River in 1972 and has become known as the premier Arkansas river to float. It flows feely for about 150 miles and is flanked by soaring bluffs and beautiful vistas. The lower Buffalo is about a 40 mile drive from Mountain View and both day and overnight floats can be arranged by a variety of area outfitters(www.ozark-float.com).

The Rush Historic District was established in the 1880's, after zinc mining started along the Buffalo River. The site is now a ghost town near Yellville and features several hiking trails with interpretive exhibits.

About 40 minutes southwest of Mountain View at Hwys. 65 & 110 is the Antique Warehouse (www.antiquewarehouse.com) in Botkinburg, featuring an incredible ten warehouse selection of antiques and stained glass. Heading south on Hwy. 65, near Greenbrier, animal lovers will enjoy visiting Riddles Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary, which is dedicated to the preservation of elephants. (www.elephantsanctuary.org). Near Conway on Hwy. 65 is the delightful village of Pickles Gap (www.picklesgap.com), featuring a petting zoo, a duck pond, folk music, and antique & knife shops.
